Adult wolf dies after killing Colorado livestock

One of Colorado’s reintroduced wolves has died in the custody of Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The patriarch of the state’s newest pack died on September 3, after being recaptured by state wildlife officials, following a series of livestock killings.

The wolf was found in poor condition, severely underweight with several injuries to a hind leg. An outside agency will investigate the cause of death and release a report in the next month or two, according to The Denver Post.

10 wolves were reintroduced to the state in December 2023 as part of a voter-mandated effort. This is the second reintroduced wolf that’s died this year.

The rest of the pack – which includes one adult female and four pups – will be released again this fall once the pups have reached adult size.  They will be set free in the same broad area where the wolves were set loose last year.

Denver to pay out to protesters who suffered injuries during 2020 George Floyd protests

Denver will pay $465,000 to settle a lawsuit filed on behalf of two protestors shot in the head with less-lethal projectiles by police officers during the George Floyd protests in 2020.

Nicholas Orlin and Shawn Murphy did not know each other but were both near Lincoln Park that evening, according to the lawsuit.

Orlin was knocked unconscious by a hard projectile after covering a tear gas canister with a traffic cone, according to the suit. Soon after that, Murphy was shot in the face with a hard projectile after he kicked away a tear gas canister.

In both cases, officers did not issue warnings before firing, according to the plaintiffs’ attorneys. Both men suffered from vision problems and facial disfigurement.

The Denver Post reports that both Orlin and Murphy have already received payments from the city of Aurora in the same case.

Changes made to Denver’s upcoming sidewalk fees

Most Denverites will have to pay $150 a year for sidewalk repair and construction, beginning in January.

That’s based on yesterday’s Denver City Council meeting, where officials approved the fee changes 13-0.

Voters approved sidewalk construction and repair fees back in 2022, with the first charges slated for this upcoming calendar year.

The initial ordinance would have charged property owners with annual fees based on the size of their lots and the type of street they live on.

While residents will face a mostly-flat rate, those with the biggest properties will still face larger fees to keep the program fueled with roughly $40 million. Under the new rules, any property with more than 230 linear feet of property frontage – including city parks and public schools – would pay an extra $3.50 per foot under the new rule.

Steve Redfearn named new Boulder Police Chief

The City of Boulder has a new police chief.

Steve Redfearn joined the city’s police department in 2021, and has served as interim chief since January 2024. Now, he’ll take on the role permanently.

Redfearn succeeds Maris Herold, Boulder’s first female police chief, who resigned at the beginning of the year to join the U.S. Department of Justice as an adviser.

Redfearn was captain of the Aurora Police Department in 2019 when officers confronted Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man who died after being forcibly arrested and administered a sedative. Redfearn altered the dispatch logs that night to describe the event as an “assault on a police officer” rather than a “suspicious person.”

The newly appointed police chief told KGNU that he stands by the decisions he made that night.

Some members of the NAACP Boulder County have already called for his resignation, according to Boulder Reporting Lab, while others in the community point out that Redfearn testified against his former colleagues after leaving Aurora.

Redfearn will have to work with Boulder’s Police Oversight Panel, a volunteer-led group, created in 2020, that reviews investigations into complaints of officer misconduct.

Redfearn will oversee a department with 280 full-time employees and a budget of approximately $43 million.
