Over 10,000 King Soopers employees are on strike. The United Food & Commercial Workers – or UFCW – Local Number 7, which is a union that represents thousands of King Soopers workers, kickstarted the strike last Thursday after overwhelmingly voting it into existence.

Connor Hall is a deli clerk and captain for Store Number 33, which is the King Soopers in the Table Mesa Shopping Center. That’s the King Soopers where the mass shooting took place in 2021, where 10 people were murdered.

Union reps say they’re protesting unfair labor practices, alleged price gouging practices, and understaffed stores.

Meanwhile, King Soopers has filed a lawsuit against the union, claiming its agenda QUOTE “prioritizes out-of-state special interests,” accusing the union of unlawfully requiring it to bargain with out-of-state labor unions that do not represent its associates. That’s according to KVDR.

The union denies forcing the grocery chain to bargain with anyone other than UFCW Local 7, and calls the lawsuit “baseless,” “frivolous,” and an attempt to distract from the strike. That’s also according to KVDR.

Prior to the strike starting, King Soopers gave its “last, best, and final offer.” It included: $4.50 hour wage increase for top-rated employees, $180 million in additional wages for associates, and affordable health care benefits, among other things.

However, Local 7’s president told The Colorado Sun that King Soopers’ proposed wage increases are inadequate, and would only apply to a select group of people based on zip code. The union is also concerned about health benefits, inadequate staffing, worker safety, and competition from third-party lenders.
