King Soopers files temporary restraining order against union workers

King Soopers has filed for a temporary restraining order against its unionized striking employees, accusing picketers of harassing customers.

Employees across 77 Denver Metro locations, represented by the UFCW Local 7, went on strike last Thursday after months of failed negotiations. They’ve been picketing outside of their stores all week.

Just yesterday, the grocery giant filed for the restraining order in Denver District Court in an effort to keep stores safe for all customers and workers, according to King Soopers and City Market president Joe Kelley.

King Soopers filed a lawsuit against the union on Friday, condemning the union for allegedly unlawfully requiring it to bargain with out-of-state labor unions that do not represent its associates. The company also accused the union and picketers of violating the Colorado Labor Peace Act, and added that there have been several instances involving firearms – including a customer threatening to shoot at the store, and another customer brandishing a weapon after a physical altercation with a picketing employee.

Union reps have called the lawsuit “baseless,” “frivolous,” and an attempt to distract from the reasons behind the strike: lack of staffing, price-gouging, and unsafe working conditions. UFCW Local 7 reps say that union members will remain on the strike lines.

That’s all according to KVDR.

Colorado wants to force insurance companies to help homeowners

A new bill at the Colorado Capitol aims to encourage homeowners to protect themselves from wildfire.

The measure would require insurers to provide a wildfire risk assessment to homeowners in the wildland urban interface and suggest a list of mitigation techniques. Democratic Representative Brianna Titone says the goal is to lower insurance rates, and make homes more wildfire resistant

The idea is to make it clearer to homeowners the steps they need to do to protect their houses, and hopefully help avoid catastrophic losses that could make insurance even harder to get.

The first hearing for the bill has not yet been scheduled.
