Over 2,000 people took to Denver’s streets yesterday to protest Donald Trump’s policies. This was one of many rallies across the nation that corresponded with Presidents’ Day.
Many organizers nationwide dubbed the movement “No Kings on Presidents’ Day” and “Not My Presidents’ Day,” according to news outlets from around the country.

Denver’s protest was organized primarily by the Common Ground People’s Collective and the 50501 Movement. There was an initial rally on the Capitol steps with several speakers, followed by a large march down Colfax Avenue and 15th St for about an hour, then back to the Capitol and area around Civic Center Park.
KGNU’s Grace Maruska, Alex Lauria, and Dave Ashton all attended the rally and subsequent march.
Dr. Lisa Calderon was one of the speakers. For over 20 years, they’ve been teaching in academia with women’s studies, ethnic studies, sociology, criminal justice, 30 plus years of public service, and they’re currently the Executive Director of Women Uprising Colorado.
Jackie Burt also spoke, who is the founder of Show Up For Good. Many of the speeches we’ve been uplifting on KGNU from these protests are angry, fierce, and not afraid to show it. Those are incredibly powerful and can incite wide levels of change. Burt takes a different approach – not a better or worse one, but different.
There were a solid amount of kids out in the crowd. Many teachers were in the crowd – some spoke – and there was discussion about the importance of teaching kids about history. Making sure they know what happened in the past, so history doesn’t repeat itself – like many say it is right now.
