Dolores Huerta has done and seen a lot in her 94 years on this planet. But, you wouldn’t be able to tell if you met her. She carries with her a spirit of energy and hope that you wouldn’t believe someone who’s been actively engaging in activism for decades could still possess.

Huerta founded the National Farm Workers Association alongside Cesar Chavez back in the spring of 1962. She’s done so much for workers and their families across the United States through her work as a union organizer and human rights advocate. Huerta joined over a hundred people in Denver yesterday for Latino/Latina Advocacy Day to stand up for immigrants and speak out against Trump’s cuts to DEI programs across the country.

She spoke about the power of collective action, nonviolence and boycotts – one of the many actions she’s well known for.

KGNU’s Jackie Sedley attended the protest, organized primarily by Latino/Latina Advocacy Day, or LAD, and Denver’s branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. Protesters gathered a few blocks from the Capitol, rallied and listened to speakers, and then marched together to the Capitol building.

On today’s segment, you’ll hear from Dolores Huerta herself, as well as Tim Hernandez – a Chicano teacher and organizer in the Denver-Metro area. Hernandez is also a former Colorado State Representative.
